DominionStrategy Qualifier for 2012 US National Championships

We are hosting a 4-player qualifying tournament on Isotropic for the US Dominion National Championships, to be held July 14 in Chicago.  One lucky winner will receive airfare and lodging to compete at Nationals.

Before I get into the details of the competition, please note that this competition is unfortunately open only to Americans.  In addition, although children under 18 may compete, they will need to be accompanied to Chicago with a parent or guardian, who will have to pay their own way.

We will be hosting four Qualifying Days:

Sunday, June 24 at 2PM EDT (GMT -4)
Tuesday, June 26 at 8PM EDT (GMT -4)
Thursday, June 28 at 10PM EDT (GMT -4)
Saturday, June 30 at 11AM EDT (GMT-4)

Registration for each Qualifying Day will open the day before the Qualifying Day (i.e., June 23, 25, 27, and 29).  You may register for as many days as you like, but if you do not show up without providing prior notice, you will be disqualified and prohibited from registering for future Qualifying Days.

On each Qualifying Day, the registered players will be randomly divided into Qualifying Pods of 4 players each (with some 3-player Pods if necessary).  The Qualifying Pods will be publicly posted on the front page of DominionStrategy.com.

Each group of players will play four games among itself.  We will post the seating arrangement for the first game, and then in each subsequent game, the players will rotate seating order (P1-P2-P3-P4, then P2-P3-P4-P1, then P3-P4-P1-P2, then P4-P1-P2-P3).  Games must be played with randomly selected cards, no veto mode, and with the official point counter enabled unless all players agree otherwise.

Games will be played on Isotropic, in the “Tournament” lobby.  (They must be played in the “Tournament” lobby to allow the players to fix seating order.)  Please show up promptly at the appointed time: if you are more than 15 minutes late you will be considered a no-show, and the remaining players will play 3-player games.

Results must either be posted in this forum topic or be emailed to dominionstrategy@gmail.com.  Please include links to the Isotropic logs.

At the end of each Qualifying Day, each player will be ranked by the number of wins they achieve.  Ties will be broken first by number of opponents defeated, then second-place finishes, then third-place finishes, and then a playoff.

For Qualifying Day 2, we have adopted a points system instead. For a four-player game:

6 points for the winner
4 points for second place
2 points for third place
0 points for fourth place

For a three-player game:

6 points for the winner
3 points for second place
0 points for third place

Ties will be broken in favor of most wins, then a playoff.

Each Qualifying Day, the top four players will advance as semifinalists.  After the four Qualifying Days, 16 semifinalists will remain; they will duke it out amongst themselves into 4 finalists, and then to 1 champion.

If you  have any questions, please post them in the comments below or in this topic.

Registration for Qualifying Day 1 will open tomorrow, June 23.

Americans mean US citizens or US residents? I am not citizen but I am here for quite some time, on F-1 visa. Can I compete?

  3. WanderingWinder says:

    Identical starting hands?

  4. WanderingWinder says:

Something tells me I read this already, but I can’t find it. When are the semis and the final?

  5. If we register for a qualifier but then cannot attend, how do we provide notice that we cannot attend? Who do we message?

  6. Jeff Lin says:

Where can we find out specifics about nationals? For instance, I’m curious what other outlets lead to a qualifying spot for nationals, what the prizes are for doing well within Nationals, etc.
