Dominion Round Table: Donate

donate

Dominion Round Table is a new article discussion format where we have several guests discuss one topic. Today’s discussion is on the Event Donate from Empires. We welcome your feedback and comments. To join the discussion on this month’s Round Table, please click here.

Note: This article has been edited for clarity. Things have been moved around as needed.

Beyond Awesome: Welcome everyone to the first Dominion Round Table. Before we start, we should probably get intros out of the way. I will go first. Hi, I’m Beyond Awesome, and I will be moderating this month’s Round Table. Today’s’ topic is Donate.

Donald X: I’m Donald X., world famous game designer

Dan Brooks:  Hi. I’m Dan Brooks, and I’ve played with Donate in a number of tournaments.

Seprix: Hi. I’m Seprix, and I just had a pizza for dinner.

aku chi: Hi. I’m aku chi. I lost a Donate game in the last Dominion League Championship match!

Limetime: I am limetime and I am pretty bad at giving non-contextualized Dominion advice.

vsiewnar: Hi, vsiewnar here. From the Caribbean.

markusin Well, I am markusin, and I am from Canada. I’ve been playing Dominion since sometime between Hinterlands came out and Dark Ages came out. I’ve been recently playing a lot more Dominion. Like, since a week before the Dominion Championship started.

Beyond Awesome: Thanks everyone.

Donald X: I can introduce Donate.

Beyond Awesome: Go for it!

Donald X: So at one point I tried doing some big effects as events, just, as a way to get new events. They mostly didn’t work out. I will look up some other ones here. Gain the trash; gain all actions from a pile; pick your next hand. Donate worked, with the trick being to give it a Debt cost so you could always get it. It increases the puzzle of the early game; how best do you open, when exactly do you Donate. Donate separates the men from the boys; in my day that expression wasn’t offensive. Just, if you have a better Donate plan than your opponent, you will zoom ahead.

Secret Passage is a nifty, yet subtle card.  At first glance, it can seem mediocre, but then you start realizing all the creative “tricks” you can do with it—“Oh, Secret Passage would be nice with ________!”  It’s by no means a power card and is often a bit weak in isolation, but Secret Passage is unique in that the “cute” synergies are often what make it worth getting.

Beat the Bot #1

Are you up for a challenge? Would you like to play against a top player without the fear of being called a ‘n00b’? Geronimoo’s here for you in a recurring segment on the revived Dominion Strategy Blog: “Beat the Bot”. In it I present you a simulator bot painstakingly tuned and nurtured to perfection. Your goal is to beat that bot. It’s that simple.

All you need is my simulator which has a brand new feature of being able to play against it. Click these 2 links. You’ll need to do some copy-pasting, but then just click the “Play against the bot(s)” and you’re off. The interface is not pretty like Shuffle It’s, but it’s functional. At least you’ll feel like playing against something intelligent instead of Lord Rattington, merrily chapeling away his Provinces.

For this first installment I used only Base Dominion. Here’s the Kingdom used:

Dominion 101: Why Trashing is Good

Dominion 101 is a series focused on the fundamentals of Dominion. Why Trashing is Good is the first article in this series. You can discuss this article by following this link.

Dominion 101

Part 1 – Why Trashing is Good

Original Article by werothegreat

Many games of Dominion have a card that lets you trash, hereafter referred to as a “trasher”. Some trash a single card, others multiple, some do other things in addition to trashing, but all of them trash. The mechanic is simple: trashing removes one or more cards from your deck. The difficulty lies in understanding whether or not it’s a good idea to trash. Players usually understand the benefit of getting rid of Curses, which do nothing and detract from your point total. Of course you want to get rid of those, who wouldn’t? But often when a player is first told that they should trash their starting Estates and Coppers, they balk. Estates are worth points! And Copper is needed to buy cards!

So here we come to an idea of efficiency. Yes, you need points to win the game. Yes, you need coins to buy more cards. But each Estate in your hand is wasted space. That Estate you drew could have been a Silver, or a Village, or a Market. But because you didn’t want to trash it, it’s in your hand, giving you effectively 4 cards to work with instead of 5. Would you rather have a hand of Estate, three Coppers, and Smithy, or a hand of Village, three Coppers, and Smithy? Substituting one card can make a huge difference. By getting rid of your starting Estates, you reduce the opportunities of wasted space in your hands from three to zero.
